{"id":8772,"date":"2018-09-05T16:21:46","date_gmt":"2018-09-05T16:21:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ox7.ee3.mytemp.website\/?p=8772"},"modified":"2018-09-05T16:22:11","modified_gmt":"2018-09-05T16:22:11","slug":"sustainable-diets-a-powerful-tool-for-climate-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ox7.ee3.mytemp.website\/zh\/sustainable-diets-a-powerful-tool-for-climate-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Sustainable diets: a powerful tool for climate action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"b82b\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure\">Do you know how much impact your diet has on climate change?<\/p>\n<p id=\"e53d\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">As part of a recent On Purpose training session on Climate Change, we learned about the need to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere to meet the target set by the Paris Climate Agreement of holding temperature rises below 2 degrees.<\/p>\n<p id=\"b285\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">As a group we used the <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/tool.globalcalculator.org\/globcalc.html?levers=22rfoe2e13333313c2c2c1n31hfjdcef222hp233f211111fn2211111111\/dashboard\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"http:\/\/tool.globalcalculator.org\/globcalc.html?levers=22rfoe2e13333313c2c2c1n31hfjdcef222hp233f211111fn2211111111\/dashboard\/en\">Global Calculator<\/a>, a tool designed by the UK Government\u2019s International Climate Fund and the EU\u2019s Climate-KIC which allows you to explore the world\u2019s options for tackling climate change and adjust variables, including lifestyle, technology and fuels, to see the different ways in which this target could be achieved.<\/p>\n<p id=\"79bf\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">What caught our attention was the huge impact our diets have on GHGs, and the fact that a 2 degree scenario simply <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">cannot<\/em> be achieved without a reduction in meat consumption by the masses. While many of us were aware of the implications of meat consumption on animal welfare and human health, it became clear that we hadn\u2019t fully understood the environmental impact of our diets.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1820\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Having written my master thesis last year on how cities can enable sustainable, reduced-meat diets, I thought I\u2019d share some of what I have learned. Here are some mind-blowing facts and figures on the impact of our<em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">\u2018food print\u2019<\/em> (the carbon footprint of food), with a focus on meat, eggs and dairy products, and a few concrete tips to easily mitigate your \u2018food print\u2019, <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">without <\/em>breaking the bank.<\/p>\n<p id=\"5ff6\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Environmental Impacts:<\/strong> The FAO and World Bank, respectively, estimate that the total emissions from global livestock production range from <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/docrep\/018\/i3437e\/i3437e.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/docrep\/018\/i3437e\/i3437e.pdf\">14.5%<\/a> to a whopping <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.worldwatch.org\/files\/pdf\/Livestock%20and%20Climate%20Change.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.worldwatch.org\/files\/pdf\/Livestock%20and%20Climate%20Change.pdf\">51%<\/a> of all man-made greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We reach this 51% figure if we include the clearing of land to graze livestock and grow feed, keeping livestock alive, and processing and transporting the end products.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a883\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">This<em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\"> far exceeds <\/em>emissions from the <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">entire<\/em> global transport sector. But it\u2019s not just meat! You may be surprised to find that cheese produces <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">almost double <\/em>the GHG emissions of chicken (<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boell.de\/sites\/default\/files\/meat_atlas2014_kommentierbar.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.boell.de\/sites\/default\/files\/meat_atlas2014_kommentierbar.pdf\">13.5 vs. 6.9<\/a> CO2 equivalent per kg), largely due to cows\u2019 methane-producing digestion process!<\/p>\n<p id=\"cf70\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Along with this carbon footprint, the production of animal products also leads to significant water and land usage. For example, the production of 1 kg of beef requires ~<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boell.de\/sites\/default\/files\/meat_atlas2014_kommentierbar.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.boell.de\/sites\/default\/files\/meat_atlas2014_kommentierbar.pdf\">15,000 L<\/a> of water, a figure equivalent to ~110 bathtubs full!And if you\u2019re eating just one hamburger per month for a year, the size of the production space required for this equates to that of your 40 m2 flat! On top of that, animal products provoke the deaths of <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.animalequality.net\/food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.animalequality.net\/food\">56 billion<\/a> farmed animals per year.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2bb9\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Health Impacts:<\/strong> A <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordmartin.ox.ac.uk\/videos\/view\/549\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordmartin.ox.ac.uk\/videos\/view\/549\">study<\/a> conducted at the Oxford Martin Programme on the Future of Food estimates that economic benefits of improving diets globally amount to <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/business\/archive\/2016\/03\/the-economic-case-for-worldwide-vegetarianism\/475524\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/business\/archive\/2016\/03\/the-economic-case-for-worldwide-vegetarianism\/475524\/\">1\u201331 trillion US dollars<\/a> in 2050; this is driven by health improvements from recommended dietary shifts. This figure actually <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">exceeds<\/em>the environmental benefits of the avoided damages from climate change. To put this into perspective, reducing meat consumption to <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.meatfreemondays.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.meatfreemondays.com\/about\/\">3 days per week<\/a>would save the NHS \u00a31.2 billion a year, by cutting deaths from heart disease by 31,000, from cancer by 9,000 and from strokes by 5,000.<\/p>\n<p id=\"5531\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">A Rotten System: <\/strong>Agriculture receives only 4% of development banks\u2019 mitigation financing and only a few countries include livestock or agriculture in their emissions reduction plans. Meanwhile, an entrenched OECD system of government subsidies for meat and dairy producers, totalling <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/worldpreservationfoundation.org\/environment\/livestock-subsidies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"http:\/\/worldpreservationfoundation.org\/environment\/livestock-subsidies\/\">$53 billion in 2013<\/a>, actually encourages <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">growth<\/em> in production, which artificially lowers prices and stimulates consumption. In 2017, a German federal environment agency study found that <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/germany-pushes-for-tax-hike-on-meat-and-cheese\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/germany-pushes-for-tax-hike-on-meat-and-cheese\/\">90%<\/a> of industry subsidies were harmful to the environment and worked against Germany\u2019s implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement!<\/p>\n<p id=\"8429\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Although a tax on animal products and the removal of subsidies would compensate for climate damage and deter excessive meat consumption, governments would have to navigate the intricacies of this transition, including the negative impact this may have on jobs, which makes change difficult.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c6f4\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">WHAT YOU CAN DO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"bbba\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">While the problem is a systemic one, the solution starts with us\u200a\u2014\u200aone meal at a time! The impact on emissions of all of our diets is massive: <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">a <\/strong><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordmartin.ox.ac.uk\/videos\/view\/549\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordmartin.ox.ac.uk\/videos\/view\/549\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">70%<\/strong><\/a><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">reduction for a vegan diet<\/strong> and <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordmartin.ox.ac.uk\/videos\/view\/549\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordmartin.ox.ac.uk\/videos\/view\/549\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">63%<\/strong><\/a><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\"> reduction for a vegetarian diet<\/strong>. It is heartening to see the increase in availability of plant-based <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/living\/food\/meat-replacements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/living\/food\/meat-replacements\/\">meat<\/a>, <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.onegreenplanet.org\/vegan-recipe\/10-vegan-cheeses-that-will-knock-your-socks-off\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.onegreenplanet.org\/vegan-recipe\/10-vegan-cheeses-that-will-knock-your-socks-off\/\">cheese<\/a> and <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thefoodrush.com\/articles\/plant-based-milk-coffee-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.thefoodrush.com\/articles\/plant-based-milk-coffee-challenge\/\">milk<\/a> alternatives at <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2018\/jun\/08\/appetite-grows-vegan-products-uk-supermarkets-waitrose-iceland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2018\/jun\/08\/appetite-grows-vegan-products-uk-supermarkets-waitrose-iceland\">major grocery chains<\/a> in the UK, which can help enable these diets.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9d5f\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Despite the common misconception, alternative diets are not just for the wealthy. A Barilla Centre for Food &amp; Nutrition <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.barillacfn.com\/m\/publications\/doublepyramid2016-more-sustainable-future-depends-on-us.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.barillacfn.com\/m\/publications\/doublepyramid2016-more-sustainable-future-depends-on-us.pdf\">study<\/a> found that a diet with three weekly meals based on vegetables, whole grains, and extra virgin olive oil <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">halves<\/em> household food budget, in addition to improving health. So yes, it is in fact possible to eat healthier, spend less <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">and<\/em> reduce your environmental food print.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f558\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Not sure you\u2019re ready to go cold turkey just yet? Be aware, a pescatarian diet involving a direct substitution of large amounts of fish for meat may increase exposure to toxins, mercury, and can be more expensive than a veg-focused diet\u200a\u2014\u200anot to mention its implication for <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainweb.org\/sustainablefishcity\/whats_the_problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainweb.org\/sustainablefishcity\/whats_the_problem\/\">declining fish stocks<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p id=\"c4fc\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Instead, how about trying a <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/theflexitarian.co.uk\/flexitarian-diet-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/theflexitarian.co.uk\/flexitarian-diet-2\/\">flexitarian<\/a> (a vegetarian diet with occasional meat consumption) or <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/reducetarian.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/reducetarian.org\/\">reducetarian<\/a> diet (a reduction, by any degree, of animal product consumption).<\/p>\n<p id=\"53e5\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Here is a non-exhaustive list of simple ways to practice such diets, to not only reduce your \u2018food print\u2019 from animal products, but also save some cash (especially important when on an On Purpose salary!):<\/p>\n<ol class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"c30e\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--p\">Take part in a 30 day challenge, like <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/register\/?gclid=CjwKCAjw9qfZBRA5EiwAiq0Abb7SSuIq8b6v4HYQUT0YvF-zBb569qvSK92EWNJPP_WDLXx1FkiBXBoCxo8QAvD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/register\/?gclid=CjwKCAjw9qfZBRA5EiwAiq0Abb7SSuIq8b6v4HYQUT0YvF-zBb569qvSK92EWNJPP_WDLXx1FkiBXBoCxo8QAvD_BwE\">Veganuary<\/a>, made easy by substituting in <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.radianthealthmag.com\/healthy-eating\/eat-more-beans-peas-and-lentils\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.radianthealthmag.com\/healthy-eating\/eat-more-beans-peas-and-lentils\/\">beans and pulses<\/a> in your favourite recipes<\/li>\n<li id=\"5f10\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Cut your animal product intake weekly by 14% by participating in <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meatfreemondays.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.meatfreemondays.com\/\">Meatless Monday<\/a>, or 70% as a <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/graham_hill_weekday_vegetarian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/graham_hill_weekday_vegetarian\">\u2018weekday vegetarian\u2019<\/a>, while testing out delicious <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2014\/feb\/16\/jack-monroe-10-recipes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2014\/feb\/16\/jack-monroe-10-recipes\">budget recipes<\/a><\/li>\n<li id=\"e28c\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Try a <em class=\"markup--em markup--li-em\">\u2018<\/em><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/mark_bittman_on_what_s_wrong_with_what_we_eat\/up-next\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/mark_bittman_on_what_s_wrong_with_what_we_eat\/up-next\">Vegan Before 6<em class=\"markup--em markup--li-em\">\u2019<\/em><\/a> approach, opting for the vegan option on the lunch menu or going to a <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/\">vegan\/veggie restaurant<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p id=\"06f2\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--li graf--trailing\">Whichever path you take, the benefits will be significant.
